I often day-dream about this site and many others like it, prompting me to evoke a sense of euphoria or enchantment. A light & careful application of paint was used to resemble a lively landscape and the care to be taken when bushwalking through areas like this. This sacred men’s site holds extreme importance to the traditional owners, which means it needs to be respected from afar to ensure no damage is done and locals can maintain connection to the land. Parks and Wildlife and Traditional Owners have a joint management plan that now allows the area to be protected by law. Assisting local landcare groups in similar efforts, bushwalking and just getting some sun allows my time in nature to positively impact time in the studio bringing balance in my practice. My process usually involves travelling to the area, spending a few hours sketching and photographing the place before heading back to the studio and getting started. This time I was tasked with working from sketches & several photographs of the place I'd taken a long time ago, as well as photographs online. It was the most challenging landscape to date. It’s not often I paint water in my scapes simply because there’s not enough bodies of water around! Looking forward to doing more of them, now. Glen Helen is a favourite of mine, but still haven’t painted it yet. :O A landscape painting should reveal an ancient and modern energy that the land provides. A theme I strive to execute well. Gillen came straight after the most recent rains in Alice where we saw the ranges go green for that very brief period. I wanted to use a blend of acrylic and watercolour techniques to brighten the piece up and give it a fun, impressionistic look. Looks much more natural. I’m learning a bit about the spinifex ecosystem, how to apply paint to create a sandy texture and minimizing the colour palette to only cobalt blue, red oxide, yellow ochre and titanium white. It can look so similar to buffel grass in appearance, so I think my subconscious took that on. My fascination was with its soft, cushion like appearance from afar and it’s spiky sharp leaves that you wouldn’t dare run into. I love the sporadic layout of it across the ground, and I wanted to simply come up with an effective composition. The young yellow spinifex spikes imitate soft grass and throughout the hill is a stream of regenerating Blue Mallee Gums. The dead, blackened charcoal branches are perfectly contrasted with it’s regeneration of thick, promising blue leaves. On this day there were silky smooth, transparent clouds that were stretching their way across the sky, adding another layer of contrast to the landscape. The entire walk takes 4 hours and although I only completed 1 hour of it, I was treated to so many stunning scenes and felt an incredible amount of inspiration. It was at the end of a trail, I couldn’t go any further and I looked up. The hill from afar with all it’s spiky spinifex looks soft and inviting. Far from it!! Very dangerous walking through there… I wanted to catch a feel of the morning winter lighting, so I used cooler tones throughout the work rather than warm to emphasise on it. Cooper and Hannah Murray whom have done this successfully. They can be used to spike water, so that when animals drink from it, they’re easier to catch. The Buffel in the background, as always a symbol of westernisation is to indicate these practices rarely take place anymore. I created this particular scene below a corkwood in Larapinta near my home. It was also the day Darwin went into lockdown, and so a viral strain appearance was conjured. This, however is a focus on simple story telling behind the specie. Mature Corkwoods only have leaf blades at the end of their branches but the juvenile ones have them all the way to the top. An early coloniser is a specie that rapidly sprouts after an invasive specie has been rid of. In this case, buffel was taken out of the area and the first most commonly spread specie to colonise the area was the bush tomato. This particular specie is poisonous: Solanum Quadriloculatum. I’ve chosen not to include the tomatoes to emphasise on its inedibility. The Yeperenye belongs to the plant according to its dreaming. I’ve now found the yeperenyes feeding on Bush Tomato leaves, Sticky Tar-vine, Purslane and Puncture Vine. x4 sources that are absolutely flourishing right now after this rain. I had the joy of watching hundreds… and i mean hundreds of these critters on the side of the road with a friend. The leaves of this plant typically occur in pairs and one is usually bigger than the other. Peter Latz said in his latest botanical book ‘Tough, Tantalising or Tasty’ that the leaves are good in tea for sore throats. Tried and if you can get past the bitterness. I’ super happy that 4 works have come from it but also sad to move on because they were a lot of fun! The place is called Henry’s Garden and is located in the Undoolya Hills in Alice Springs. After all the Buffel grass had been cleared, all of these beautiful native species started to emerge. It is just a breathtaking place to walk through. I came across this maintained area along a track and knew it was a place I needed to paint. In front of a Witchetty bush and a Dead Finish lay a gully someone had dug up and filled with Buffel. Most of the area had been cleared of the weed and it had started to deteriorate in the gully. This is a fair walk from the road and a huge effort, making me quite proud of this unknown hero with a mattock! However, they do play an instrumental part in the regeneration of native flora. With this is mind, it’s still difficult to look at the landscape knowing that the natural process has been altered by the introduction of Buffel grass. The weed burns at a much higher temperature than most species in Australia, allowing its destructiveness to ravage the landscape. My fiancée and I came across this area on the side of the road following the widespread fires this January. It had me thinking that without the Buffel creating a fiery trail between all the native species, there would have been enough space between the shrubs and trees to restrict the fires movement.
